We’ve Got Big News!

Dear Equi Friends and Supporters,

It is with immense joy and excitement that I share some groundbreaking news with you. The Marie Equi Institute is proud to announce the upcoming opening of our Trans and Queer Supportive Services Center this July! This new center, located at 25th and Holgate in Portland, will be a beacon of hope and a testament to our commitment to enriching the health and well-being of the trans, queer, intersex, and gender expansive communities through trauma-informed care, culturally specific services, and social justice advocacy. Sean Brochin from Property Weirdos and Amy Munsey from Wildwood Realty were instrumental to getting us into this incredible space.

Our vision for this center has been a labor of love, born out of the urgent need for safe, affirming, and centralized support services. The increasing number of trans and queer individuals seeking refuge in our city from oppressive anti-trans legislation and the existing challenges faced by unsheltered members of our community have highlighted the critical necessity for such a facility. By offering comprehensive services under one roof, we aim to create a haven where everyone can access the care and resources they deserve without the added burden of navigating disparate and often unsafe or unaffirming locations.

We are especially grateful to Multnomah County and the Joint Office of Homeless Services for their generous funding and recognition of the importance of our mission. Their support has made it possible for us to bring this vision to life in a space that is fully ADA accessible and designed with trauma-informed and neurodivergent-friendly principles, thanks to the incredible design team at Gensler. Gensler recently supported Rose Haven, a local day center for women and gender expansive folks, in the design of their new space as well.

We are also thrilled to announce a Community Mural Event on July 13th, where we will come together to celebrate this milestone and create a symbol of our collective strength and resilience. This center will not only provide essential services like housing navigation, peer support, harm reduction, and health education but also foster a sense of belonging and empowerment through skill-sharing workshops and community events. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected community that celebrates intersectional diversity and provides a sanctuary for those in need. Thank you for your unwavering support and belief in our mission. We look forward to embarking on this transformative journey with you and making a lasting impact on the lives of many.

In Solidarity,

Katie Cox (they/she)
Executive Director
